Exploring Government Model College Borkhola
Government Model Colleges are basically for the areas where the quality of education isn't ideal, especially where the access to higher education is below the national average. In such places, the Government of Assam with special funding from Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) establishes Model Colleges. And one such college was established at Borkhola Constituency of Cachar. It is located at Dholchera Village under Jarailtola GP of Borkhola. This one is named Government Model College, Borkhola and it was inaugurated by India’s Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi himself.
When one visits the premise of this college they can feel the soothing enviornment. Situated at a Hill top it is surrounded with greenery. Right beside the college there is a old and closed NETRIP.
There are six such Model Colleges established in the state of Assam. Two of them are in Barak Valley and the rest four are in Brahmaputra Valley. In Barak Valley among the two Model Colleges, one is at Borkhola and the other is at Katlicherra. I had a talk with Dr. Mofidur Rahman the Assistant Professor at the Department of Political Science when he described the Campus and said “The campus is really beautiful with excellent infrastructure. The campus is situated on a hilltop providing a beautiful view. Student Hostels are also coming up, Teacher’s Quarter, Conference Hall, Seminar Hall all of these facilities are soon to be available.”
He also mentioned that right now the college is offering two courses — H.S. Arts in both English and Bengali Medium and Under Graduation in Arts. He hopes that in the next phase the government will introduce other streams as well. The College is affiliated with Assam University, Silchar and the Subjects available right now are English, M.I.L. (Bengali), Political Science, Economics, Sociology & Education. M.I.L. and English are compulsory and the rest are optional.
Dr. Mofidur Rahman further stated that their main motto is to develop the skills of the students, their focus is how can they groom up the students outside of basic academic curriculum with extracurricular activities, leadership skills, social service skills and so on. Dr. S.U. Ahmad the principal of the college shared a message at the upcoming college prospectus where he said “Taking note of the New Education Policy of the Government of India, our college is striving to promote skill-based knowledge, inclusive growth of education, participatory culture and value-based approach in addition to its regular courses soon. Our college shall remain ever proactive in developing its academic dimensions in terms of quality teaching, innovative practices and research to fulfil the requirement of all the stakeholders. I feel privileged to mention that we have a group of experienced, qualified, dynamic and energetic faculty members committed to their profession and dedicated towards the greater interest of the students.”
Due to the ongoing COVID situation, the college hasn’t been able to start its offline classes. Unfortunately, it is the very first batch last year that had to take their classes online. This year the faculty is hoping the situation will go normal soon. If things go normal then they will be able to start taking classes offline at the campus. The campus has a lot to offer and the students will be benefited.
The campus offers a clean, green and dynamic learning environment for quality education, a group of young, energetic & experienced faculty members, regular field trips to different socio-cultural and democratic institutions, a library and reading room and many other facilities.
In the end, Dr. Mofidur Rahman, Assistant Professor at the Department of Political Science, had requested everybody to support the college and help them in the admission process. They want the community to get involved with the college as they believe their involvement will help the college to deliver more services to the ones who need them. He also mentioned that their only intention is to deliver quality education. He also said that in today’s world education has become a pressure and the college wants to make it a pleasure. To quote the professor “We are not here to make education a pressure, we are here to make education a pleasure”. they want to make the students learn and enjoy the learning process. Marks aren’t enough, the quality education is, thus making education a pleasure will help the students to get the quality education they deserve while they enjoy their life. The college wants to shape them to become a better human being and not a person who is only running behind marks.
Currently Admissions are going on and one can visit their website for TDC admission. HS admisions are suppose to happen through Darpan which is currently closed. Also Click Here to see all the Images of the College.
