Gamocha is an Animal?
I recently came to know about a new kind of Animal and apparently it's also a symbol of culture to our very own Assam! Yes you read it correct. Gamocha happens to be a cultural symbol in Assam. No, am not joking, it actually is. But, there is a catch. It is not an animal instead it's actually a beautiful piece of cloth.
Gamocha is actually pronounced as Gamusa and it is a symbol of Assam's pride and identity. Gamocha is a Symbol of Assam's Rich Heritage. Recently Goverment of Assam tweeted and shared some knowledge to people about what Gamocha is. They wrote it is an iconic product of Assam's handloom industry, 'Gamusa' is synonymous with the diverse culture of the land. Although its primary identity is that of an angavastra, there are different types of Gamosa based on its size and usage. Pani, Posaki, Mukhosa, Tiyoni, Nuwoni, Anakata are some types of Gamosa.
They shared an image on their Twitter handle giving a brief description about Gamocha and listing out different types of Gamocha.
1) Anakata: Weaved as a single piece cloth on special occasions
2) Posaki Gamosa: Worn as angavastra during rituals and public functions
3) Nuwoni: Used for taking bath on auspicious occasions
4) Pani Gamosa: Used to soak water
5) Mukhosa: Face towel
6) Tiyoni: Bath towel
So, why was I refering to it as an Animal before? Well, a 2 year old GradeUp class video went viral this week which started a spree of memes around Gamocha. On that video a GradeUp teacher was seen calling Gamocha an Animal. "Gamocha is basically an Animal" that's what he said. East Mojo a Media House Based in Assam had tweeted about the incident along with the viral video. They wrote "Video clip of a teacher on a well-known exam preparation platform 'Gradeup' has gone viral.
In the tutorial video, the teacher is seen explaining that the 'Gamocha' (pronounced as “Gamusa”), a cultural symbol of Assam, is an animal."
Play the video above and watch
Seeing the viral meme spree GradeUp had also responded and made a tweet clarifying their side. They wrote "We sincerely apologise for this. In an old Youtube video, a faculty made a factual error while addressing the class. The faculty is no longer working with us. We ensure that Gradeup as an organisation works to provide the best exam preparation for each student to excel."
After the viral video netizens have shared multiple memes online and some went aggressive and expressed their frustration. One twitterati wrote "@gradeupapp from which angle is 'Gamusa' or 'Gamocha' an animal?! And bhaisaab ki confidence dekho...."
The very same person had made another tweet where she shared a picture of Gamosa and wrote This is a 'Gamocha' you idiots. Tell me, do you think this is an animal?" Along with the hastag #GamochalsNotAnAnimal
Another wrote "Aapna cultural symbol Gamocha is an animal.. yeh teachers nasha kark class kyu leta hai??"
Basically people are wondering the main reason behind such error? Why someone like him who was teaching at a well known exam preparation platform doesn't know what Gamocha is? Such error from some random Jon Doe can be expected but not from an educated person like him! The video is old and was originally posted on YouTube with the title ‘SSC JE 2020 Marathon Class’. But, that certainly doesn't changes the fact that he made an error of this sort which ended up hurting the sentiments of many.
The teacher who can be seen in this video he recently apologized to the people who'se sentiments may have been hurt because of his error. He also mentioned that when this class was actually taken 2 years ago he realised his mistake and rectified it in another video. People have been angry at him because of a mistake he made 2 years ago, a mistake that he had already realised and rectified. Is it alright to cancel someone for a mistake they have already rectified? Or its too much?
