Unemployment: The Enemy of All

Unemployment was a big issue in a country like India even before this pandemic but now due to lockdown it was worsen. Due to lockdown people who’s employment was based on their daily wage labour had suddenly found themselves in the centre of an epic crisis.

In 2019 a new virus was detected in Wuhan Province of China which started an epidemic and in no time it became a Pandemic. A world wide pandemic is a big threat so in March 2020 the government of India decided to implement nation wide lockdown to protect Indian citizens from the virus. That took a toll on everyone, especially on the migrant labours.

These migrant labours had No work, no money, no food. It made living hard for them so they decided to go back to their own villages. Transportation was not available so these people had started their journey on foot. It is no news to any of us that many of them died on their journey.

It also affected people working in Private Sectors, as some of them were suddenly sacked from their jobs. Some who still had their jobs were now getting half of their actual salary and in some cases only quarter of it. In 2018 Government records stated that 31 million Indian Citizens are currently jobless, in other words they are unemployed. In January 2021 it was said that the unemployment rating of India has declined by 6.5% it may seem like a small percentage but it impacts more than that.

Many had earlier claimed that the reason behind India’s high unemployment is caused due to “restrictive labour laws that create inflexibility in the labour market” many global manufacturing companies had also stated Indian labour laws to be excessively complex and restrictive. During this lockdown the world has faced an economical crisis which also affected many individuals on their jobs.

The Indian Government had taken many steps to reduce unemployment in the nation like MNREGA which assured a full 100 days of employment to a person in a year. There are several such steps taken by the Indian Government yet unemployment is still an issue. During each election year the Issue of Unemployment is brought to the people with a promise to end it yet the issue stays the way it always was.

On 8th June 2021 The Telegraph on their website writes that a survey by a private research group has shown “Over 1.5 crore jobs were lost in India in May this year and the monthly unemployment rate reached 11.9 per cent, the highest since last year’s national lockdown” the article also reads “Some 14.73 per cent people from the working age group were unemployed in urban areas and 10.63 per cent in rural areas, according to the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE).” On April 2021 the unemployment rating of India was 7.97% but in matter of a month it reached 11.9% which is a huge leap.

Each year new students from various fields graduates, each year many students drops out and many just can’t afford to study anymore and each of them start to search for jobs. Many had stopped pursuing their dreams of becoming whatever they wanted and started to apply wherever they can, private and government both. Even after that not all of them get the chance to be employed. Many remain confused regarding their life and just can’t figure out where they can shine.

Unemployment in India is serious and a big issue not just because employment isn’t available also because our education sectors are trying to raise robots who study to gain theoretical knowledge and expect them to go to work without much of a practical knowledge hence they are confused regarding their capabilities. Our education system is based on filteraton system, it filters out who ever is weak at theoretical knowledge and completely disregards practical knowledge of each an everyone. No matter how talented a person is, if that person can not clear his exams then he is not enough.

It is a serious issue cause In between the people who lost their jobs and students who finished their studies and looking for opportunities to shine the number of Unemployed citizens are increasing. It is also because of Corruption which has engulfed almost every field of work. It is also serious cause it is hampering the mental well being of a person.

The question is and it always was “When will it actually end?” And the answer is quite simple “When we will be together United and ask for what we actually need, when we will raise our voices and let our authorities know what we actually want, when we will do it together unitedly” one day it will end and that won’t be far, it only depends on us. The sooner we will seek, the sooner it will end.
