What keeps us on the right track of morality? What motivates us to do the right thing? Well, we all have different answers to this. In January 2013 Ivan Fernandez a Spaniard athlete says "What would my Mom think?" was his reason to keep his moral compass intact. Not long ago my brother sent me a link which led me to find out the incredible story of sportsmanship and morality.
In January 2013 during Burlada Cross Country Race in Spain Abel Mutai a Kenyan Athlete was leading the race and he would clearly win as well. He was only a few meters away from the finish line when he got confused with the signage and thought he already crossed the finish line so he stopped running. Ivan Fernandez was right behind him and he noticed Abel Mutai stopping, he realised what might have happened.
At this point of time one might think that the smartest thing to do here would be to get past Abel Mutai and win the Gold for themselves. Instead of doing so Ivan Fernandez decided to help him. He started to shout at Abel in Spanish! asking him to keep running. Abel on the other hand wasn't able to understand anything as he doesn't know Spanish, so he stood there instead of continuing his run.
The Spaniard Ivan Fernandez was now aware that shouting won't do much that is why he decided to take the matter on his own hands. He continued running and when he got near to Abel Mutai he pushed him to his victory. Abel who was literally standing few meters away from the finish line finally was able to cross that line because what Ivan did for him.
This was an instant decision made by Ivan and everyone who witnessed it were able to see an immediate act of Humanity filled with ethics and morality. After the run both shared warm handshakes, and even warmer feelings of real human honour. People felt good to witness such good sportsmanship during the era of cut-throat arena of global sport.
Later on Ivan Fernandez was being questioned by journalist regarding his act which made everyone proud of him and his response were fascinating.
The Journalist asks "Why did you do that?"
Ivan says he dreams that someday we can have a kind of a community life where we push and help each other to win.
The Journalist insisted "But why did you let the Kenyan win?"
Ivan replied, "I didn't let him win, he was going to win. The race was his."
The Journalist again asked, "But you could have won!"
Ivan then asks "What would be the merit of my victory?, What would be the honour of that medal? & What would my Mom think of that?”
What would his mom think of that? That is what kept him on the right track of morality. A video went viral where people could clearly see what Ivan did and he was globally praised for that. Abel Mutai won the Medal ofcourse, but Ivan Fernandez won the hearts of millions of people through out the world.
